Description | Ninhydrin is a molecule that, if placed into water, will exist in equilibrium with another molecule called indan-1,2,3-trione. When it is placed into a solution with any nineteen of the twenty amino acids (not including proline), it will react to form a molecule that gives the solution a deep purple color. Therefore, we can use ninhydrin to determine whether or not there are amino acids present in the mixture. |
