Acylation and Esterification of Amino Acids

---|---|
Description | Amino acids are reactive molecules primarily because they contain two major functional groups - the amino group and the carboxylic acid group. Individual amines can undergo the acylation reaction in the presence of acylating agents and the amino group on amino acids is no different. In the presence of acetic anhydride, the amino group on the amino acid will be acylated. Carboxylic acids can also undergo their own reactions, such as the Fischer esterification. Therefore in the presence of the right reagents, amino acids will also undergo the Fischer esterification reaction. |
