Description | Drawing for a two panel comic strip showing Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae Yokum listening to Joanie Phoanie discuss their son, Honest Abe, with a man sitting next to her in her limousine. Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae are standing at the rear door window on the driver's side with worried looks on their faces and are holding hands. When Joanie states, as the car drives off, that she will "send him away to school!!" because it will "be cheaper than hiring a married couple to look after him!!", Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae run after it, dragging Marryin' Sam along with them, promising to get married and to "look after him - cheap!!" In this series, Joanie Phoanie, a satire of singer Joan Baez, adopts Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae's son, Honest Abe. Daisy Mae had plotted for Joanie Phonie to capture Li'l Abner on Sadie Hawkins Day to ensure that their son would have at least one of his biological parents, but, by accident, she captured Li'l Abner herself. Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae then seek to work for her in order to be close to their son. Li'l Abner, published between 1934 and 1977, featured the lives and adventures of the hillbillies of Dogpatch. Al Capp invented Sadie Hawkins Day in 1937, giving women the opportunity to chase men and, if caught, force them to marry. |
