Description | Drawing is a seven panel cartoon showing a broadcast reporter interviewing a well-dressed man who is holding a blank picket sign; the reporter asks "Why?" The man explains that it is "because I have nothing to say. I am a member of the New Middle." When asked to differentiate the "New Middle" from "Old Middle", the man adds that "the Establishment Middle is do nothing moderate. We in the New Middle advocate the escalation of moderation till it takes over the world!" He further states, "our cry is 'moderates of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but your alienation!'" He adds that the "New Middle" seeks "more social welfare legislation and more poverty, more Latin American reform and more invasions, more air pollution controls and more air pollution." The reporter asks, "but, sir, isn't this program self-defeating?" To which the man replies, "more defeats and more decisiveness!" The reporter closes with a final question, "Sir, what are the New Middle's chances for influencing government policy?" The man says, "better and better! We've already got the State Department." |
