Description | Six-panel editorial cartoon shows Senator Edward Kennedy as a spectator watching and calling a close horse race. Among the "horses" are Senators Henry Jackson of Washington, Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, Lloyd Bentsen of Texas and Fred Harris of Oklahoma, Governors Jimmy Carter of Georgia, George Wallace of Alabama, and Terry Sandford of North Carolina, and Congressman Morris Udall of Arizona. In the last panel, Kennedy has disappeared from the rail, with the winner declared as "KENNEDY!" The 1976 presidential campaign began in 1975 with various Democratic contenders jockeying for position. Kennedy insisted that he would not run, but many viewed him as the strongest candidate, and Newsweek magazine put him on the cover with an article characterizing the other candidates as less than exciting. Kennedy held fast to his position and Carter eventually won the nomination in 1976. Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu. |
