Description | Editorial cartoon shows Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater of Arizona and a large group of his supporters in a boat sailing down a narrow trickle of water surrounded on both sides by desert featuring cacti and a cow skull. The supporters carry signs reading "California Win," "Down by the Old Mainstream," "Oh, You Kid," "23, Skidoo!" and "Delegate Strength." In 1964, Senator Goldwater and his conservative Republican supporters mounted a campaign insisting that there was a hidden majority of Republicans who supported his conservative views. They were buoyed by his win of the California primary, and Goldwater went on to win the nomination, but was decisively defeated by the Democrats in the November election. |
