Description | Cartoon shows Hitler offering a clone of himself as a candidate in "Germany's Referendum Sunday, Aug. 19th." With the death of German President Paul von Hindenburg on August 2, 1934, Hitler announced that his office as Chancellor would be merged with the presidency and that he would be Fuehrer and Reich Chancellor. In a plebiscite on August 19, this was approved by almost 90 percent of the voters. The drawing is a parody of Homer Davenport's famous 1904 cartoon of Uncle Sam endorsing Theodore Roosevelt for President. |
