Description | Three-panel comic strip shows Li'l Abner, who has been caught by Daisy Mae in the Sadie Hawkins Day race. Marryin' Sam asks if he wants the "$2.00 Deluxe Ceremony" or the "Cheapskate" $1.00 one. Li'l Abner opts for the cheap one, and the preacher immediately pronounces them "man and wife." Mammy says "Married at last! Ah nevah tho't ah'd live t'see th'day!!" In 1937, Capp introduced Sadie Hawkins Day, the day that any woman could marry any bachelor she caught before he crossed the finish line. It was so popular, he repeated it every November. Although in this 1943 strip, it appears that Daisy Mae has finally caught her man, subsequent strips provide Li'l Abner with a loophole, for the two did not marry until 1952. |
