Description | Twelve-panel cartoon shows Flash Gordon, on the Planet Mongo, fighting and defeating three Tigrons (tigers with horns) as he attempts to rescue his sweetheart Dale Arden from Ming the Merciless. Flash is aided by Prince Thun of Lionmen (who has a bushy head and a tail) and Prince Barin. Flash Gordon, drawn by cartoonist Alex Raymond, was King Features Syndicate's response to the popular science fiction strip, Buck Rogers. Begun in January 1934, this is one of the earliest strips in the series. The stories and text were mediocre, but Raymond's fine art work made him stand out among cartoonists. He was also responsible for three other popular strips, Secret Agent X-9, Jungle Jim, and Rip Kirby. |
