Description | Photographs assembled and used in exhibition sponsored by IBM, and a book based upon the exhibition. Most images are copy photographs used to create "History Wall," a timeline (1890-1950) showing the origins and development of computing machinery (from ca. 1830), and computers (from early analog computers in the 1920s). Images include portraits, and portrait photographs beginning ca. 1850, of mathematicians and scientists--early pioneers in computer development--such as Charles Babbage, Herman Hollerith, Wallace J. Eckert, Albert Einstein, Alan Turing, and John Von Neumann; many types of calculating machinery--including punch-card and time-keeping machinery; electric typewriters, data processing systems, and people using machines; close-up and interior views of computers and machinery, including circuitry and chips; and images of graphics, three-dimensional objects, typography, and illustrations; close-up and details of exhibition panels; scale models of exhibit; design layouts, and installation; visitors viewing the exhibition. Includes images of Charles Eames, Ray Eames, and Eames Office staff at work. |
