Description | Photographs show views of cities, towns, and villages; daily life and occupations in urban and rural settings; prominent monuments and landmarks; archaeological sites and ancient buildings; the landscape and the natural environment; and religious rites and processions in places throughout Palestine (present day Israel and the West Bank), Lebanon, and Damascus, Syria. Cities and towns depicted in Palestine include Jaffa, Ramleh, Lydda (Lod), Jerusalem, Bethany, Bethlehem, Jericho, Nablus, Nazareth, Haifa, Cana of Galilee, Tiberias, Hebron, Jenin, Bethel, Bethsaida, Nain (Nein), Capernaum, and the ruins at Samaria. Also depicted are the Plains of Jezreel, Dothan, Esdraelon, and Huleh; Mounts Carmel, Tabor, Ebal and Hermon; the Jordan and Kishon rivers, the Sea of Galilee, and the Waters of Merom. Buildings and sites in Damascus and the ruins at Caesarea Phillipii (Bāniyās) in Syria are depicted. Scenes in Lebanon include Beirut, Zahleh, the ruins at Baʻlabakk and a Roman bridge over the Hasbani River. Notable images include the Muslim Nebi Musa procession, ceremonies at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Armenian convent of St. James in Jerusalem, the tomb of Tabitha, children at a Christian mission school and the photographer's camp at Nablus, women washing wool in a stream at Jenin, "Gypsies" (Romanies) from Mt. Hermon, a Muslim band in Jerusalem, and the interior of a Greek church and a view of the city from the Jewish Quarter in Damascus, seven images showing the holy caravan with the Mahmal returning from Mecca in and near Damascus, a grain market in Haifa, potters in Nazareth, and Jewish fishermen by the Sea of Galilee.
