Description | Cartoon shows a fat old gentleman labeled "The Old Guard" suggesting to an obstinate-looking President Coolidge that the Republicans produce their own farm bill. In the 1920's, farmers did not share in the general prosperity. Farm leaders proposed legislation that would stabilize prices at home and allow surpluses to be sold abroad at reduced prices. Coolidge, who believed government should not intervene, vetoed the bil. Republicans feared this would benefit the Democrats, but efforts to devise a new bill acceptable to the President failed. |
