Description | In 1953, when Senator Joseph McCarthy's investigation of communists in government was at its height, Kelly was one of the few editorial voices to speak out against his tactics. He introduced Simple J. Malarkey (a vicious wildcat resembling McCarthy) and the half-blind Mole MacCarony, who had been invited by the pious Deacon Mushrat to help clean up dangerous elements in the swamp. Malarkey quickly took over, ousting the Deacon and instituting his own cleanup program. In this four-panel comic strip, Malarkey and Mole have fallen out when Mole threatens to dump a bag of feathers on Malarkey who has been pushed into a tar pot. Malarkey manages to dump the tar pot on Mole and then reaches for an axe, saying he can fix Mole up to "be as brainless an' heartless as they come." Mole in turn reaches for his gun, saying "I got votes says you can't, cat, ol' boy." Kelly suggests not only that McCarthy may be tripped up by his own tactics but that his allies may turn on him as well. The cartoonist was prophetic, although the Senator's downfall did not come for another year. |
