Description | In 1953, when Senator Joseph McCarthy's investigation of communists in government was at its height, Kelly was one of the few editorial voices to speak out against his tactics. He introduced Simple J. Malarkey (a vicious wildcat resembling McCarthy) and the half-blind Mole MacCarony, who had been invited by the pious Deacon Mushrat to help clean up dangerous elements in the swamp. Malarkey quickly took over, ousting the Deacon and instituting his own cleanup program. In this four-panel comic strip, Malarkey threatens the Deacon with a rope, saying if the Deacon sticks his neck out, he "mought get it cotched on somethin." When the Pup Dog grabs the end of the rope and runs away, it trips up Malarkey, and the Deacon seizes on the opportunity to push Malarkey into a simmering pot of tar. Kelly suggests not only that McCarthy may be tripped up by his own tactics but that his allies may turn on him as well. The cartoonist was prophetic, although the Senator's downfall did not come for another year. |
