Description | Four-panel comic strip shows P.T. Bridgeport, a bear and Pogo's campaign manager, trying to hold a campaign rally. He and Howland Owl fall into a dispute over who should be making the speech while one of the rabbits steals the attention of the audience by offering peanuts for sale. This strip was one of a number in which Pogo was a reluctant candidate for president. The Pogo for President campaign began in 1952 as a promotional move, offering "I Go Pogo" buttons based on Eisenhower's "I Like Ike" slogan, but it quickly took on a life of its own, and Pogo's candidacy was revived every four years until 1972. |
