Description | Cartoon shows Democratic Senators J. Thomas Heflin and Furnifold Simmons stamding outside a mud wall (labeled "Outside the Party Breastworks") watching Republican Senator George W. Norris boxing with the GOP elephant. Heflin says, "Now let's see what his party will do to him." In the presidential election of 1928, Heflin and Simmons broke with their party and endorsed Republican Herbert Hoover, while Norris broke with his and endorsed Democrat Al Smith. In the 1930 Senatorial elections, Norris faced considerable opposition from members of his own party, but won re-election. Heflin and Simmons were both repudiated by their parties and defeated. |
