Description | World War II cartoon shows Office of Price Administration head Prentiss Brown offering a pair of crutches to John Q. Public. Brown says, "Let's try these for size -- you know we can't guarantee that you're going to be able to keep both of those shoes you're wearing." A piece of paper in the yard reads, "Plan to Cut Shoe Ration November 1." In the backyard a car, from which the tires have been removed, stands on blocks. In the fall of 1943, news spread that the government was planning to cut back on the three pairs of shoes a year allowed each person. Berryman suggests that the American public is already doing more than its part. The rumors eventually proved to be unfounded. |
