Is he talking in his sleep, or am I dreaming?

Description | World War II cartoon shows Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey City in bed with Communist Party General Secretary Earl Browder. Browder appears to be talking in his sleep, saying, "Frank Hague is a swell guy." Hague wonders if Browder is talking in his sleep or if he is dreaming. In July 1943, the Communist Party of the United States endorsed Hague for reelection, based on his record of supporting President Roosevelt and the war effort. This support was astonishing since Hague and his corrupt machine were longtime Communist foes. After the German invasion of Russia, however, support for those who strongly prosecuted the war became the number one Communist priority. Berryman suggests that politics makes strange bedfellows. |
