Description | World War II cartoon shows Lt. General Ben Lear admonishing John Q. Public, blissfully asleep in his chair, surrounded by papers with comforting slogans such as "A revolt by the conquered nations will overthrow Hitler!" "Bomb the Axis into submission," "Win the war with a blockade," "When the Germans collapse we'll clean up the Japs!" "Our superior resources will do the trick," and "Propaganda will break the enemy's morale." Lear says "I most solemnly assure you that this war will be victoriously concluded only after American ground soldiers have broken our enemies' lines." In September 1942, in a speech to the American Legion, Lear warned that there would be no easy ways to win the war and said the United States must be prepared to lose as many as three million men. |
