Description | World War II cartoon shows Office of Price Administration head Prentiss Brown as the defendent in a courtroom. Labor leaders William Green of the AF of L and Philip Murray of the CIO appear as judges. Green and Murray are also present as policemen and as Counsels for the Offense as well. Green (as judge) tells Brown, "After hearing the evidence, we've decided to put you on probation. But if you don't mend your ways, it's the jug for you." Labor leaders continually complained during the war that the government was not doing enough to keep prices low. In July 1943, they warned President Roosevelt that they could not be held accountable for labor's actions if prices were not returned to September 1942 levels. Berryman was continually outraged by what he viewed as the unpatriotic actions of the labor movement during the war years. |
