Description | World War II cartoon shows Fleet Admiral Ernest King, Chief of Naval Operations, on the deck of a battleship raising signal flags that tout the dramatic increase in the strength of air and naval power. They read: "Our fleet today, 14,072 vessels, Our Fleet in 1940, 1,076 vessels, Our Navy airforce today, 18,269 planes, Our Navy airforce in 1940, 1,744 planes." King comments, "I think the Japs can read these signals. They are not in code." After a slow start, the United States produced weapons and supplies at a rate unequaled anywhere. In September 1943, the Navy announced that the United States had the "greatest sea-air power on earth." |
