Description | World War II cartoon shows Uncle Sam admonishing Office of Civilian Defense head James M. Landis who carries a paper reading "Qualifications for V-Home Sticker." Uncle Sam says, "I'd be careful how you handle that little fellow, Mr. Landis. He's doing a pretty good job and after all we're fighting this war so his home will continue to be his castle." In the background John Q. Public is seen outside his home tending his garden. His car, minus tires, is mounted on blocks. In July 1942, the OCD announced that each home in the country would be visited by a civil defense official and rated on such measures as salvage and conservation of food and materials and purchases of war bonds. Qualifying homes would be awarded stickers reading "V-Home." The program never caught on. |
