Description | World War II cartoon shows John Q. Public, wearing dark glasses, reading a newspaper headlined "Gloomy War Reports." War Production Board head Donald M. Nelson tells President Roosevelt, "I think you might tell the little fellow that he can take those dark glasses off, Mr. President. This is not a time for undiluted optimism, but the picture isn't as black as it looks to him. We're really getting going." Despite the bad news on the military fronts after Pearl Harbor, the United States continued to make progress in gearing up its industrial strength to fight a long war. In a speech in New York City on April 4, Nelson praised war production, saying it was "as remarkable as anything in our history." By the end of 1942, the United States was meeting production goals undreamed of in previous years. |
