Description | World War II cartoon shows Mussolini as a battered rooster on crutches with a bandaged wing, standing atop the wreckage of war (labeled "The Balkans") crowing "Cock-a-doodle-doo!" Hitler, drawn as a vulture, says scornfully, "What's HE crowing about?" In the spring of 1941, Hitler mounted a successful campaign in the Balkans, defeating Yugoslavia and Greece in a brief campaign. Mussolini tried to claim some of the glory, having his troops continue to attack the Greek forces even after Greece had surrendered to the Germans, resulting in a second Greek surrender to Italy two days later. |
