Description | Cartoon shows President Roosevelt watching out the window as a crowd of people flock to the headquarters of the Republican presidential candidate, Wendell Willkie. They carry signs such as "2 Terms Were Quite Enough for Me!" "Al Smith's Not the Only One Who Can Take a Walk," "I Was an Original New Dealer," "I'm Hunting for a True Liberal," and "The Democratic Party Left Me!" A sheet of paper on Roosevelt's desk reads, "If a man write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mouse-trap than his neighbor, tho he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door," (a statement attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson). When Roosevelt ran for a third term in 1940, he had built up a lot of resentment among many of his former supporters who had come to disagree with some of his actions and had lost faith in the New Deal. Some announced their support for the charismatic Willkie. Despite these defections, Roosevelt won the election in November. |
