Description | This stone sculpture shows four images were carved in the arched niches that adorned the four faces of the base of the column as in the case of the inscribed pillar of Skandagupta at Kahaon. The tops of the niches have broken off and the figures are also considerably damaged. One of the better-preserved images represents the four-armed Harihara. The face is destroyed but some of the head-dress is preserved so that the kirita and jatamukutas can be discerned on the left and right respectively. The hair falls over the shoulders, being dressed in ringlets on the left but tumbling loosely on the right. An ekavali, a rather long upavita adorned with a floral plaque at the knees, armlets, and earrings comprise the ornaments worn by the figure. The dhoti, tied with a thin girdle, is lightly pleated on the left side. A lion's skin falls over the right thigh. The upper left-hand holds a conch, the lower hand rests on the head of Cakrapurusa. The upper right hand is in varada mudra, the lower one rests on the head of a gana. Clockwise, the next niche contains a representation of Visnu in his boar incarnation. The head is entirely missing, the left-hand rests below the waist, while the right-hand raises Prithvi, holding her by the hip. The broad vanamala, simple armlets and the ekavali are seen. The God steps on Adi Sesa who has a serpent canopy around the head. In the third niche is a standing image of Visnu the head and serpent canopy being damaged. The back right and left hands rest on figures of Cakrapurusa and Kaumodaki while the front hands are in varada mudra and hold a sankha. a long upavita reaches to the knees. The fourth niche contains a representation of the two armed Vamana carrying an aksamala in the right hand and a kamandalu and a crooked staff in the left hand. The God is pot-bellied and wears a short dhoti and a deerskin draped over the left shoulder. The hair is dressed in strands, drawn back over the head, and allowed to fall over the shoulders. The short dhoti just reaches the bowed knees. a stylized representation of rocks and mountains is seen below. Out of four faces of this object, only three are shown. |
