Description | The Bṛhadīśvara Linga is the primordial deity of this temple. An annual Mahabhiseka is performed, which consists of pouring libations of water, oil, milk, ghee, honey, fruit juice etc. over the Linga to the accompaniment of hymns, devotional songs, and Nadasvaram. The libations are performed in a set sequence, following the prescriptions in the scriptures. To mark the culmination of the cermoney, sanctified water from two Kalasas (pots) are poured over the Linga. Water from the smaller pot Manomani is poured on the pitha (pedestal). After the completion of the Mahabhiseka, the Linga is adorned with garments, jewels, and flowers and a special diparati is performed to mark the end of the Linga abhiseka. |
