Description | Bṛhadīśvara temple of Tanjavur, Tamil Nadu, built by Rajaraja Cola in 1010 CE, is acclaimed as the finest achievement of Cola art and archiecture. On account of its distinct form and beauty, it has been inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Monument. The present day city of Tanjavur is located at 350 km south of Chennai. Access to the temple is through two pyramidal entrance towers called gopuras, which were built by Rajaraja. Upon entry into the temple complex, the m ost striking feature is the Vimana or the main sanctuary tower. The Vimana, standing over 65 meters in height and built entirely of stone, represents one of the greatest achievements of the architects of those times. |
