Description | The audio-visual collections of Digital Himalaya include songs from Laya, Bhutan; Thangmi songs from Nepal; Yari Aso's songs, the Mangghuer Folktale Literature, and songs from Gcig sgril County, from Qinghai Province; the Jizong and Minyak collections from Sichuan and songs from Tha Rgyas in Tibet. The wutu ritual is the main theme of the Wutu Collection which is an exorcism ritual held during winter by the Monguor (Tu) people of Gnyan thog Village (Tongren County, Huangnan Prefecture, Qinghai Province, China). There are eighteen short films in the Wutu Collection, shot by Zhu Yonzhong in 1996 and edited by Gerald Roche, showing the ritual process step-by-step. In 1998 Jamyang Yeshi, a talented singer and musician from the Amdo region of Tibet, fled and settled in Dharamsala, India. Over eight years in India he performed widely until his life took a different course in 2005. Jamyang was invited to Canada to perform at the Banff Centre's 'Cultures at Risk' Summit and was granted refugee status in Canada. This brought him closer to his brother, Tsundue, who had also escaped Tibet and made his home in the United States. However, both men's freedom in exile kept them continents apart from the rest of their close-knit family in Tibet. The films and audio collected from the regions of Himalaya has made this section rich with its contents. |
