Description | The Digital Himalaya project was designed by Alan Macfarlane and Mark Turin as a strategy for archiving and making available ethnographic materials from the Himalayan region. Based at the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, the project was established in December 2000. From 2002 to 2005, the project moved to the Department of Anthropology at Cornell University and began its collaboration with the University of Virginia. From July 2014, the project has relocated to the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and is engaged in a long term collaboration with Sichuan University. The collection is divided into several sections. The audio-visual collections of Digital Himalaya include songs from Laya, Bhutan; Thangmi songs from Nepal; Yari Aso's songs, the Mangghuer Folktale Literature, and songs from Gcig sgril County, from Qinghai Province; the Jizong and Minyak collections from Sichuan and songs from Tha Rgyas in Tibet. The section Birds of Nepal, contains a collection of books, scientific papers, articles and published and unpublished reports on birds in Nepal. Ethnic groups, filmmakers, private collectors videos, films, photographs and interviews on and around Himalayan Region are also included in the Digital Archives with their respective names and collections. The Journal section contains scanned copies of many journals, magazines and publications of Himalayan studies. Few titles to mention are - Chowkidar, Regmi Research Series, Himalayan Journal of Sciences, The Bhutan Review, Doon Library Newsletter etc. The Map covers an overview of the geography, economics, politics and culture of the region, the Illustrated Atlas of the Himalaya by David Zurick and Julsun Pacheco, is a full-colour, comprehensive atlas of contemporary land and life in the Earth’s highest mountain range. Naga Database has a range of recordings, images showing the primitive ways of living and the changes found by the anthropologists. The documentation work is of exceptional value to researchers and readers of various ages. The section called Rare Books and Manuscripts is made with requests from readers to digitize and disseminate rare books and manuscripts. Focusing on this area they have created a collection which consists of dictionaries, College Texts, Historical records, Thesaurus and Glossaries dating back to early 19th Century. |
