Abstract | On May 7th, 1915 a submarine of the German Imperial Navy sank the 32,000 tonne Maritime Fleet Auxiliary Lusitania off the south coast of Ireland. The sinking of this Cunard Line passenger ship resulted in the loss of some 1,200 men, women and children, including 118 Americans, and a number of Canadians as well. Lucy, as Lusitania was affectionately called by the British, was sunk by torpedos fired at its beam within 20 km of the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland. The Lusitania was in fact a Royal Navy Auxiliary Cruiser carrying passengers, as well as contraband. She was carrying shells and munitions from America to the UK. The Special Intelligence relating to the sinking of the Lusitania is outlined in this never before published article. |
