| Description | Video- Every Kid is going to be Connected to the Net. Presented by Elliot Soloway, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, University of Michigan and Cathleen Norris, Regents Professor, University of North Texas. ABSTRACT The economic crisis of the last few years is an opportunity to start again; to do a reset. The past hasn't worked and isn't going to work; it's time to reset the system, it's time to start again. We need to truly dump the instructionalist/didactic model of education where teachers talk at the kids and kids do endless worksheets. Throwing electronic whiteboards (EWBs), digital textbooks and even a cart or two of iPads into the classroom is not going to fix the situation; that is simply more of the same. We -- researchers, teachers, principals, superintendents, parents -- know how kids learn: It's time to adopt a constructivist, active learning, 21st century skills model of education. The key catalyst for such an adoption is the availability of a serious computing device for each and every learner, 24/7. That has been a problem; that is no longer a problem. |
