Description | This may be the first time this type of aggressive butterfly behavior has ever been recorded... While in the process of selecting sites to lay her eggs on a nearby Passionvine plant, this female Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae incarnata) took a particular interest in the spider webs nearby. After hovering in one spot for a bit, she moved in close and started clawing away at the webs, apparently to get at or drive away the small "Daddy Longlegs" spider (Pholcus phalangioides) which was lurking behind them. What a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. |
