Description | “The sky grew darker, painted blue on blue, one stroke at a time, into deeper and deeper shades of night.” ― Haruki Murakami, Dance Dance Dance \ Vincent van Gogh is one of the greatest Dutch painters after Rembrandt. He remained poor and virtually unknown throughout his life, but produced great art. After the people of Arles signed a petition saying that van Gogh was dangerous, he decided to move to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. On May 8, 1889. In November 1889, he was invited to exhibit his paintings in Brussels. He sent six paintings, including "Starry Night." This painting is based on his direct observations as well as his imagination, memories, and emotions. The steeple of the church, for example, resembles those common in his native Holland. The whirling forms in the sky, on the other hand, match published astronomical observations of clouds of dust and gas known as nebulae. |
