Description | Eratosthenes (c. 276 BC -- c.194 BC) was a Greek scholar nicknamed "Beta." This is because he was considered the second best in so many fields. Despite the dismissive nickname, Eratosthenes is still celebrated to this day for his significant contributions to math, astronomy, and geography. He is perhaps best known for measuring the circumference of the Earth, and for devising the "Sieve of Eratosthenes," a quick method for identifying prime numbers. |
