Description | Believed to be either an English or Scottish folk song, "The Water is Wide" originated around the 1600's. Originally "Oh Waly Waly," about Lady Barbara Erskine, daughter of the 9th Earl of Mar. Married the 2nd Marquis of Douglas in 1670, but falsely accused of adultery by, Lowrie of Blackwood, a man she would not love. She returned to her father and died unmarried. |
