Description | Bill Richmond was a black man who ran his own business in 1800's London. A champion boxer he took on white boxer Tom Cribb, who was younger and heavier in a national title fight in 1805. He lost the fight but used his earnings to set up a pub and boxing academy where he trained the likes of Lord Byron. In 1810 he met African-American Tom Molineaux, who was a plantation boxer from the the Southern USA. Tom was younger and bigger and Bill trained him to take on Tom Cribb in another title fight in 1810. Molineuax was winning right up until a ring invasion by the racist crowd who injured Molineuax and gave Cribb extra recovery time. |
