| Description | A&E Biography. Video starts in February 1879, Oscar Wilde moves to London, determined to sell himself as a professor of esthetics. He moved in with a friend, Frank Miles, a well known and well connected portrait painter. It was through him that Wilde made contact with the prestigious people. Everyone was talking about him, even the Prince of Wales. In 1880 he produced his first play, Vera; or the Nihilists, but he could not get it published. A year later he self published a book of poems. People didn’t like the book. In January 1882, he boarded the S.S. Arizona and arrived in the U. S. He came to lecture, he became a hit. Wilde had an enormous admiration for America. He left America in December 1882 he left with legitimacy as an artist and lots of money. Video is of good quality and appropriate for high school students. |
