Description | When water freezes, it expands and becomes less dense. This means that there is the same number of particles taking up more space. Since the ice cubes are less dense than the water, they float! As an ice cube melts, its volume changes, but its weight is conserved (law of conservation of mass). So, the melted water has exactly the same weight as the water it displaced as an ice cube the water level stays the same! |
