"The River" by Mary Jane Beaufrand--The Pick of the Week from 60 second Recap®

Description | In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "The River" by Mary Jane Beaufrand. What's not to like about beautiful, scenic, rural Oregon? For starters, it's not Portland, where all Ronnie's friends are. It's also not the intellectual/cultural/hipster hub where Ronnie pictured herself developing into her pre-college self. And then there's the dead girl in the river ... As avid readers of fiction will suspect early on, the scenic beauty of Ronnie's new town is merely a façade for some pretty horrifying activity, which quickly sweeps Ronnie into its dangerous whirlpool. Mary Jane Beaufrand's "The River" is a troubling book to be sure, but some of its grim-ness is counterbalanced by dark humor and beautiful writing. Best of all is the (semi-predictable) high school romance that's both sweet and satisfying. This is a great resource for motivating upper grade readers. |
