Description | Texas is the site of a wild nighttime spectacle. Annually from May through October, some 40 million Mexican free-tailed bats migrate to their breeding home in Bracken Cave, San Antonio. Scientists enter the cave through the above-ground mine shaft, built when bat guano was farmed and sold for fertilizer. Animal decay causes the near toxic ammonia-filled air to fill the space. Flying at nearly 60mph, bats use echo-location to navigate their environment and forage for insects. Chiropterologists determined that Bracken Cave is an ideal bat breeding environment.
