Description | Based on the WyomingPBS program "What’s in a Name", students will view episodes of the program to learn about how Wyoming towns got their names. In the introductory video Phil Roberts from the University of Wyoming introduces the PBS series entitled “Main Street Wyoming: What’s in a Name”. This introductory clip discusses how early explorers first named the rivers, streams, and mountain ranges and passes of Wyoming. In the accompanying lesson plans (found in Support Materials), students will then work as a group to create a fictitious Wyoming town. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to discuss collaboratively with peers accessing their prior knowledge or schema to complete a Word Web brainstorm. Students will generate a list of items that they “Need to Know” in order to answer the driving question of the unit. Students will create a fictitious WY town. Students will use collaborative skills to create a project based off of their fictitious WY town. Students will then present their projects to show their understanding of how a town is established and the essential components of a town. such as: Town Name, its History, Economy and Demographics, Location, Tourism, and Local Character’s stories. |
