| Abstract | The reaction of [ Ru $_{3}(CO)$ $_{12}$ ] with Ph $_{3}SnSPh$ in refluxing benzene furnished the bimetallic Ru–Sn compound [ Ru $_{3}(CO)$ $_{8}(μ-SPh)$ $_{2}(μ$ $_{3}-SnPh$ $_{2})(SnPh$ $_{3})$ $_{2}$ ] 1 which consists of a SnPh $_{2}$ stannylene bonded to three Ru atoms to give a planar tetra-metal core, with two peripheral SnPh $_{3}$ ligands. The stannylene ligand forms a very short bond to one Ru atom [Sn–Ru 2.538(1) Å] and very long bonds to the other two [Sn–Ru 3.074(1) Å]. The germanium compound [ Ru $_{3}(CO)$ $_{8}(μ-SPh)$ $_{2}(μ$ $_{3}-GePh$ $_{2})(GePh$ $_{3})$ $_{2}$ ] 2 was obtained from the reaction of [ Ru $_{3}(CO)$ $_{12}$ ] with Ph $_{3}GeSPh$ and has a similar structure to that of 1 as evidenced by spectroscopic data. Treatment of [ Os $_{3}(CO)$ $_{10}(MeCN)$ $_{2}$ ] with Ph $_{3}SnSPh$ in refluxing benzene yielded the bimetallic Os–Sn compound $[Os_{3}(CO)_{9}(μ-SPh)(μ_{3}-SnPh_{2})(MeCN)(η^{1}-C_{6}H_{5})]$ 3. Cluster 3 has a superficially similar planar metal core, but with a different bonding mode with respect to that of 1. The Ph $_{2}Sn$ group is bonded most closely to Os(2) and Os(3) [2.786 and 2.748 Å respectively] with a significantly longer bond to Os(1) , 2.998 Å indicating a weak back-donation to the Sn . The reaction of the bridging dppm compound [ Ru $_{3}(CO)$ $_{10}(μ-dppm)$ ] with Ph $_{3}SnSPh$ afforded [Ru $_{3}(CO)$ $_{6}(μ-dppm)(μ$ $_{3}-S)(μ$ $_{3}-SPh)(SnPh$ $_{3})]$ 5. Compound 5 contains an open triangle of Ru atoms simultaneously capped by a sulfido and a PhS ligand on opposite sides of the cluster with a dppm ligand bridging one of the Ru–Ru edges and a Ph $_{3}Sn$ group occupying an axial position on the Ru atom not bridged by the dppm ligand. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
