| Abstract | The new $[\{Co_{5}C(CO)_{12}\}Au\{Co(CO)_{4}\}]^{−},$ $[1]^{−},$ cluster has been obtained from the reaction of $[Co_{6}C(CO)_{15}]^{2−}$ with two equivalents of $[AuCl_{4}]^{−}.$ $[1]^{−}$ reacts with an excess of $HBF_{4}$ resulting in the formation of $[\{Co_{5}C(CO)_{12}\}_{2}Au]^{−},$ $[2]^{−}.$ The new derivatives $[Co_{5}C(CO)_{12}(AuPPh_{3})],$ 3, and $[Co_{5}C(CO)_{11}(AuPPh_{3})_{3}],$ 4, have been obtained by reacting $[2]^{−}$ with two and four equivalents of $[Au(PPh_{3})Cl],$ respectively. All the new species have been structurally characterised by means of X-ray crystallography as their $[NEt_{4}][1],$ $[NEt_{4}][2],$ $[NMe_{3}(CH_{2}Ph)][2],$ 3 and $4·thf·0.5C_{6}H_{14}$ salts and solvates. $[2]^{−}$ may be viewed as a homoleptic Au(I) complex containing two $[Co_{5}C(CO)_{12}]^{−}$ clusters as ligands. Similarly, $[1]^{−}$ and 3 are heteroleptic Au(I) complexes containing one $[Co_{5}C(CO)_{12}]^{−}$ cluster ligand as well as $[Co(CO)_{4}]^{−}$ or $PPh_{3}.$ Conversely, 4 contains the $[Co_{5}C(CO)_{11}]^{3−}$ cluster stabilized by three $[AuPPh_{3}]^{+}$ fragments. $[1]^{−}$ and $[2]^{−}$ have been investigated in solution by means of electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods, revealing a very rich redox propensity to form the closely related $[1]^{n−}$ (n = 1–3) and $[2]^{n−}$ (n = 0–3) species. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
