| Abstract | A series of green-emitting up-conversion (UC) phosphors $Ba_{5}Gd_{8}Zn_{4}O_{21}:Yb^{3+},Ho^{3+}$ were prepared by a modified sol–gel method, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were measured to characterize the crystal structure. The obtained UC samples emit dazzling green light and their spectra are composed of strong green emission peaking at 544 nm and negligible red emission peaking at 666 nm with the excitation of a 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser diode, assigned to $^{5}F_{4}/^{5}S_{2}$ → $^{5}I_{8}$ and $^{5}F_{5}$ → $^{5}I_{8}$ transitions of $Ho^{3+},$ respectively. The dependence of UC spectra on dopant contents, temperature and pumping power was employed to analyze UC emission color stability. The possible UC mechanisms and processes were proposed based on dependence of the UC emission intensity on pump power, and the lifetimes of green emission $(^{5}F_{4}/^{5}S_{2}$ → $^{5}I_{8})$ were also investigated to better comprehend the energy transfer (ET) process. The origin of spectrally pure green-emitting was discussed in detail by analyzing UC and down-conversion (DC) spectra in both the visible and NIR region by comparing that of the UC phosphor $CaIn_{2}O_{4}:Yb^{3+}/Ho^{3+}$ with highly efficient green emission. Results suggest that $Ba_{5}Gd_{8}Zn_{4}O_{21}:Yb^{3+},Ho^{3+}$ phosphors with intense green emission and high color purity have potential applications in displays and illuminating technology. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
