| Abstract | N-Methylaniline-induced Si−Si bond cleavage of $Si_{2}Cl_{6}$ has been theoretically studied. All calculations were performed by using DFT at the MPWB1K/6-311++G(3df,2p)//MPWB1K/6-31+G(d,p) levels. An ionic $S_{N}i-Si$ nucleophilic substitution mechanism, which is a newly found nucleophilic substitution in silicon-containing compounds, is proposed in the N-methylaniline-induced Si−Si bond cleavage in $Si_{2}Cl_{6}.$ Unlike general $S_{N}i-Si$ nucleophilic substitutions that go through a pentacoordinated silicon transition state, ionic nucleophilic substitution goes through a tetracoordinated silicon transition state, in which the Si−Si bond is broken and siliconium ions are formed. Special cleavage of the Si−Si bond is presumably due to the good bonding strength between Si and N atoms, which leads to polarization of the Si−Si bond and eventually to heterolytic cleavage. Calculation results show that, in excess N-methylaniline, the final products of the reaction, including $(NMePh)_{3−n}SiHCl_{n}$ (n=0–2) and $(NMePh)_{4−n}SiCl_{n}$ (n=2–3), are the Si−Si cleavage products of $Si_{2}Cl_{6}$ and the corresponding amination products of the former. The ionic $S_{N}i-Si$ nucleophilic substitution mechanism can also be employed to describe the amination of chlorosilane by N-methylaniline. The suggested mechanisms are consistent with experimental data. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
