| Abstract | BACKGROUND: Septic pulmonary emboli are the result of infections that typically originate from an extrapulmonary source. Septic pulmonary embolus is a rare disorder that classically presents with fever, respiratory symptoms, and lung infiltrates. OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to share our experience of a rare diagnosis that was the result of a very common bacterium seen in the Emergency Department (ED). CASE REPORT: We present a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sepsis presenting as bilateral septic pulmonary emboli in a patient with undiagnosed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. A 29-year-old Hispanic man presented to our ED with a history of abdominal pain and vomiting for 3 days and new onset of shortness of breath. The patient was seen 2 weeks prior for a simple abscess incision and drainage and was treated with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. On the day of admission, a helical computed tomography scan of the chest was obtained, which revealed bilateral septic pulmonary emboli. The patient was admitted for intravenous antibiotic therapy and was subsequently found to have MRSA sepsis. CONCLUSION: Septic pulmonary embolus is a rare finding that is most commonly seen in patients who are immunocompromised. The patient fully recovered after aggressive antibiotic therapy. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
