Abstract	Mass displacements inside the Earth or at the Earth’s surface will generally perturb the Earth’s rotation, both in position of the axis with respect to the Earth’s surface and in rotation rate. The Earth deforms elastically on short time scales and viscously on long time scales to loads and forcings. In order to study Earth rotation on all time scales it is therefore necessary to use viscoelastic Earth deformation moels. A general method to do this by means of normal mode techniques is described, after which the theory is applied to secular and long-term rotational changes. Not only can mass displacements perturb the Earth’s rotation, but on its turn changes in the Earth’s rotation can also induce mass displacements: redistribution of ice and water over the Earth’s surface will induce polar wander, but polar wander can induce sea-level changes again and can trigger or end cycles of ice growth and ice decay on geological time scales. This makes the relation between variations in the Earth’s rotation and geodetic and geological signatures an intricate and complicated one.
