| Abstract | The effect of a carbon additive on the microstructure and the magnetic properties of melt-spun SmCo$_{7−x }$M$_{ x }$C$_{ y }$ (M=Ti, Zr, Hf, V and Ge; x = 0–0.3 and y = 0–0.1) ribbons was studied. Based on the XRD and the TEM analyses, a pure 1:7 phase could be formed for the C-containing ribbons with M= Ti and Ge. However, carbide phases, i.e., Sm$_{2}$C$_{3}$ for M=Zr and Hf, and SmCoC$_{2}$ for M=V, respectively, were found. Nevertheless, a slight C addition may effectively refine the microstructure and improve both the intrinsic coercvity and the magnetic energy product in all the studied ribbons. Among them, the SmCo$_{6.9}$V$_{0.1}$C$_{0.1}$ ribbons with σ $_{ r }$ = 58.7 emu/g, $_{ i }$ H $_{ c }$ = 13.5 kOe and (BH)$_{ max }$ = 9.3 MGOe, and the SmCo$_{6.9}$Hf$_{0.1}$C$_{0.1}$ ribbons with σ $_{ r }$ = 61.6 emu/g, $_{ i }$ H $_{ c }$ = 11.8 kOe and (BH)$_{ max }$ = 10.3 MGOe are most suitable for the bonded magnet applications. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
