| Abstract | Impact of selection and other environmental determinants on the additive genetic variance was studied for traits under selection, viz. live weight at 6 month (6WT) and first greasy fleece weight (GFW). Data on 3067 Bharat Merino sheep for 19 years (1988–2006) were divided in four periods P1 (1988–1992), P2 (1993–1997), P3 (1998–2002) and P4 (2003–2006). Estimates for inbreeding ranged from 2.32 to 3.12 % in four periods. Least squares means for 6WT in four periods were 25.53, 23.79, 20.77 and 21.92 kg, respectively; corresponding estimates for GFW were 1.008, 0.843, 0.659 and 0.673 kg. Heritability estimate (h$^{2}$ ± SE) for 6WT was 0.135 ± 0.077, 0.148 ± 0.059, 0.063 ± 0.051 and 0.020 ± 0.065 for the periods P1, P2, P3 and P4, respectively. Corresponding estimates for GFW were 0.192 ± 0.086, 0.135 ± 0.058, 0.275 ± 0.081 and 0.055 ± 0.068. The estimates of breeding value (BV ± SE) for 6WT in four periods were 22.29 ± 0.01, 22.36 ± 0.01, 22.45 ± 0.01 and 22.51 ± 0.00, whereas corresponding figures for GFW were 0.798 ± 0.002, 0.813 ± 0.002, 0.837 ± 0.002 and 0.839 ± 0.002. Phenotypic trend over 19 years revealed sudden drop in the phenotypic expression of traits. Positive genetic trend for 6WT and GFW was observed; however, the magnitude of the trend was small. Bharat Merino being a synthetic strain had limited variation that declined due to selection. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
Ministry of Education, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), has sponsored and funded the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) project.
